University of Eastern Finland to participate in European alliance for rare disease research

GeneCellNano Flagship director, Professor Seppo Ylä-Herttuala is the principal investigator for University of Eastern Finland in the new European Rare Diseases Research Alliance (ERDERA). ERDERA, which kicked off in September, has received funding from the Horizon Europe programme and is led by the French research institute INSERM.

ERDERA brings together over 170 organisations from 37 countries, from the public and private sectors, to advance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment research in rare diseases. The project encompasses multiple approaches from preclinical, clinical and translational research, drug development and diagnosis innovation, biostatistics, data and regulatory science and research funding to social sciences and humanities, as well as patient engagement and education.

The role of University of Eastern Finland is to develop viral vector-based gene transfer methods for rare cardiovascular diseases in addition to manufacturing methods and preclinical testing for gene therapy drugs, and to contribute to the research of using the latest gene editing technology to repair faulty genes.
